The Qualitative Pyramid of Chianti Classico

Chianti Classico, a renowned wine region in the heart of Tuscany, has always been known to produce high-quality wines. Throughout the long and rich centuries-old history of Chianti Classico, a wine region recognised worldwide thanks to its prestige and the emblem of Black Rooster - become a true symbol mandatory on every bottle - the Qualitative Pyramid of Chianti Classico has been introduced. It is a classification system aimed at identifying and enhancing the wine’s quality in three types: Annata, Riserva and Gran Selezione.

At the bottom of the Qualitative Pyramid, resides the Chianti Classico “Annata”, which represents the basic wine of the region. It is a wine with fruity aromas, whose production characteristics include pleasantness, finesse and balance, making it ideal for everyday meals. It is a young and fresh wine, which, compared to the other types, requires a minimum ageing of only 12 months.

At the next step we find the Chianti Classico Riserva, a more structured and complex wine, with a higher quality than the “Annata”. Characterized by a minimum ageing of 24 months - of which 3 of bottle refinement - it presents a fruity profile, with fine integration of oak that supports the wine’s structure and consistency.

At the top of Qualitative Pyramid, we find the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, that was introduced under Italian wine legislation in 2014. It is an excellent wine, which stands out, firstly, because it is produced from single vineyards or selection of the best estate-owned grapes and, secondly, it has a period of ageing longer than Chianti Classico Riserva. With a minimum ageing of 30 months of which 3 of bottle refinement, it represents a perfect combination between elegance, structure and finesse. It is a wine of great depth and longevity, fruity, spicy and enveloping.

With this classification, the Chianti Classico enhances its authenticity, representing the territory, guaranteeing the wines quality and allowing consumers to enjoy a different sensory experience at each level of the pyramid.
